I hold the Knight Chair in Computer-Assisted Reporting at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication of Arizona State University. Before joining ASU in 1996, I was the research editor for The Miami Herald newspaper in Florida. Major projects on which I worked at The Herald won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, the Investigative Reporters & Editors Award, the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, and other awards.
In January of 2010 I was chosen for the Fulbright Portugal 50th Anniversary Distinguished Chair, to spend the fall semester teaching graduate journalism students at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. This blog will cover my preparation for this trip and what I do while there, both professionally and personally. I’m writing this mostly for myself, but also so my friends and colleagues can follow along, at least vicariously. However, I welcome anyone else who is interested.
